Stephanie Brown

Steph Brown is Assistant Professor of English and affiliated faculty member of the Gender and Women's Studies and Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory programs. She received her PhD in English literature from the University of Virginia in 2012. Her current book project, Watching Women: State Surveillance and Feminist Activism in Early 20th Century Britain, documents British activists’ responses to forms of state surveillance that emerged to target female activists in Britain during those decades. She has recently published articles in Criticism, Tulsa Studies in Women’s Literature, Literature & History, and The Journal of Modern Periodical Studies on the work of James Joyce, Edith Ayrton Zangwill, Claude McKay, Sylvia Pankhurst, and the early-twentieth-century London newspaper the Worker’s Dreadnought. The forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Virginia Woolf (2021) includes her chapter on "Woolf's Feminism." She is the editor of a scholarly edition of Edith Ayrton Zangwill's novel The Call (2019), which appeared in Bloomsbury Academic's Modernist Archives series. Current and recent courses cover 20th- and 21st-century British, Anglophone Caribbean, and Irish literature, modernist literature, and the rhetoric of historic and contemporary protest and mass cultural movements. Dr. Brown also runs the Literature and Culture in the UK program, which takes students to London for five weeks during the summer to study London's literature and theatre.
