AZ in Israel

Israel

The Arizona in Israel – Study Abroad program offered by The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies provides a hands-on introduction to Israel’s dynamic society. Israel is a modern country deeply rooted in ancient cultures, and it is situated in one of the world’s most important historical and geopolitical crossroads.

Students will split the month in Israel between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and will enroll in credit-bearing courses that incorporate numerous field trips and fieldwork assignments. Throughout the month in Israel, the focus will be on engaging in authentic Israeli experiences and learning about Israel from a wide range of perspectives.

In the past after studying, traveling, and training in Israel, students have traveled together to Zambia, where they stayed for five weeks. They trained in Lukasa, and then worked on a development project in the village of Mphande. Departmental faculty are exploring possibilities for adding an experience for students in Nepal in the future.

Cultures, Land and Politics in Oaxaca

Oaxaca, Mexico

This research-based eight-week program offers students the opportunity to conduct research in social or environmental science while further offering each student the ability to design and conduct their own research project under the supervision of knowledgeable and experienced local researchers.

Contemporary Cuba: Collective Visions

Cuba

This one-month summer program offers students the opportunity to study a unique and controversial country between excursions to tropical beaches and lively nightclubs. The interdisciplinary field-based program uses a social justice lens to examine Cuba's recent history and contemporary processes of change and continuity, focusing on environmental, political and socioeconomic transformations.  Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible.

IDEAS: Antigua, Guatemala

Coordinated by CLAS core-faculty member Elizabeth Oglesby, the IDEAS (International Program for Education and Social Action)  study abroad program is a summer, semester or year-long program. It is a unique experience that combines rigorous academics with for-credit internships around themes such as development and public health, ethnic relations and human rights, and indigenous and environmental politics. It partners with the Association for the Advancement of the Social Sciences in Guatemala, one of Guatemala's leading intellectual centers that emphasizes the connection between research and social action.

Antigua, Guatemala

Students can take a maximum of 12 credits during the summer and 15 credits during the semester.

Security and Peacebuilding in Colombia

Colombia

This 10-week program in Bogotá, Colombia, offers an academic experience alongside for-credit internships in security and conflict resolution. Students earn 9 units of U of A credit studying security while contributing to a lasting peace in Colombia. The program includes opportunities to engage the leaders behind the 2016 peace accord, and excursions to peace communities and the comunas of Medellín. 

Students will earn 9 units of credit on this program.

  • LAS/POL/ANTH 348: Drug Wars & Oil Fortunes in Latin America — 3 credits
  • LAS/POL 395: Special Topics- Conflict & the Peace Process in Colombia — 3 credits
  • LAS/POL/PA/ANTH 493: Internship — 3 credits. Internships are tailored opportunities with a flexible schedule. Internship areas include: security sector, NGO, IGO & nonprofit.

Arizona in Brazil

Advance your Portuguese language skills during this six-week summer program in Fortaleza, a city off the north coast of Brazil. Immerse yourself in Brazilian culture by living with a local family and exploring this beautiful country through cultural excursions.

Students will earn 6 units of credit on this program.

Arizona in Jordan

The Arizona in Jordan program is an eight-week summer program based in the Jordanian capital of Amman, bustling with cafes, shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Amman offers the perfect milieu for experiencing an Arabic-language immersion. In addition to Arabic courses, students attend volunteering opportunities, cooking, and calligraphy classes. In addition to the coursework, students participate in several academic excursions to sites such as the Nabatean ruins of Petra, the Bedouin desert valley of Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Ajloun, and Wadi Mujib.

Arizona in Turkey

The Arizona in Turkey program is an eight-week summer study abroad program based in Istanbul. Please note it is cancelled for summer 2024. Stay tuned for future summers.  Straddling the Bosporus Strait and located on both the European and Asian continents, Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city. In addition to language coursework, students participate in several academic excursions to regional sites. Weekly activities and language partners help students integrate culture and language learning.

American University in Cairo

The American University in Cairo is an English language university located just outside of Cairo, the Egyptian capital.  University of Arizona students on this exchange take classes across disciplines alongside their Egyptian counterparts. Arabic is also available, either as part of a regular class schedule or intensively through the Arabic Language Institute. View this video for a brief introduction to AUC.

Arabic Flagship Summer Intensive Program in Meknes, Morocco

During the summer, Flagship scholars attend intensive courses in Modern Standard Arabic, Arabic Media, and Moroccan dialect, Darija. The Moroccan dialect course develops the participant's colloquial language skills so he or she can use it in daily life, with the help of a language partner who will interact with the participant exclusively in Moroccan Arabic.

Another main component of this program is excursions and cultural enrichment; the Resident Director organizes field trips and excursions throughout the summer, followed by presentations or research papers. Former participants have visited Fes, Casablanca, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss, Marrakesh, Asila, and the Atlas Mountains. Participants stay with host families in Meknes. Arab American Language Institute in Morocco (AALIM) has a large pool of host families who are willing to welcome Flagship students. Arizona Arabic Flagship students who achieve language proficiency requirements for this program may receive competitive Flagship scholarship funding sufficient to cover a large portion of their program fees.

Morocco

School of Russian and Eurasian Studies in Kyrgyzstan

The Department of Russian and Slavic Studies, in collaboration with the Human Rights Practice Program at the University of Arizona, invites students to an unforgettable summer in Bishkek, the lively capital of Kyrgyzstan. Hosted at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), this eight-week, faculty-led program combines intensive Russian language study with hands-on experience in human rights advocacy. Participants enroll in an immersive Russian language sequence that emphasizes practical communication skills for everyday life and professional contexts. Coursework is complemented by regular cultural programming designed to deepen understanding of Kyrgyz society, regional history, and the multilingual realities of daily life in Bishkek. A defining feature of the program is direct engagement with human rights work. Through site visits, guest lectures, and structured reflection, participants gain insight into how human rights challenges are addressed on the ground. Program highlights include a trip to Ala Archa National Park, a breathtaking reserve in the Tian Shan mountains, and a three-day excursion to Lake Issyk-Kul, a stunning high-altitude lake famous for its crystal waters and mountain scenery. This program is ideal for students interested in Russian language development, international education, human rights, humanitarian work, and experiential learning.
