About the School of Global Studies

Providing intersectional and interdisciplinary approaches to global issues

The new School of Global Studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences encompasses eight distinct yet interconnected areas of study, each offering opportunities for intellectual growth, interdisciplinary research, and community engagement. The school is a vibrant academic community dedicated to fostering global understanding and positive change.

Undergraduate and graduate education

Whether your passion lies in Latin America, the Middle East, the Southwest, Judaic studies, gender studies, human rights, or global dynamics, our programs offer the expertise, resources, and support to help you succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.

Languages

The school promotes and teaches various lesser-taught languages, such as Arabic, Hebrew, Maya Kiche, Maya Kachikel, Persian, Portuguese, and Turkish. The school also contains an Arabic Flagship Program, one of only three in the country.

Title VI National Resource Centers

The Center for Latin American Studies and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies are both federally funded Title VI National Resource Centers, or NRCs, which provide research and instruction in foreign languages and international studies, as well as outreach to K-12 schools and the wider community. Both centers also receive funding for Foreign Language and Area Studies student fellowships.

Research

The units in the School of Global Studies share a commitment to intersectional and interdisciplinary approaches to pressing questions of the 21st century, with a focus on international, global, regional, gender, and ethnic issues.

Outreach and community engagement

The school offers educational and professional development for Tucson, the state of Arizona, K-12 teachers, and community college engagement. It also offers public community courses on various topics.
