Doctoral candidate Jason Jie Gao who is our dual grad student in the Ph.D. Program in Anthropology and Middle Eastern & North African Studies, has just published a new article in Economic Anthropology titled: “Informality and Social Networking: The ‘Huan Qian’ practice of the Chinese Business Community in Morocco.”

Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Morocco, Jie’s article examines how Huan Qian—a small-scale informal currency exchange—operates not only as an economic practice but also as a key mechanism for building trust, social networks, and cross-cultural ties between Chinese migrants and local Moroccans. This publication is Jie’s third article from his dissertation project on the Chinese business community in Morocco.
